AncestryDNA Results are in

May 17, 2013

OK, now I am really confused.

I just got back my results from my 2nd DNA tests from Ancestry.com. My first set put me in Haplpgroup J2B. Now I realize that this is my male ancestry, but the location of the 20,000 year line, is in present day Egypt, Saudia Arabia, Syria, and Iraq.

That was a shock, in and of of itself. But the 20,000 year mark so, “Oh, OK” to me. I didn’t find that very helpful. Nor did I find any “hints” as to who I might be related to on Ancestry.

Technology changes, and in the area of DNA, it too changed. Having attended a number of Webinars on DNA, and listening to a presentation at Roots Tech 2013, I had another set of tests run. They were in my “in box” before I had my 2nd sip of coffee, let alone my 1st cup of coffee.

Completely DIFFERENT results, as far as location. The major difference in the results were that these had ethnic information.

Scandinavian 44% ?? I get the 23% British Isles, as that is where the Worthington Surname appears to have started, back in the 1300’s.

With the results were a series of links to people, who have their trees online at Ancestry.com, so now it review time. It also means that I have to learning to do, to fully understand the difference.

To me, the J2B results “aren’t on the map” in these new results. I am guessing that the new testing is not “ancient”, but the timeframe covered in the new results is something less then 20,000 years.

J2 is now J-M172

January 28, 2013

In a recent blog post, Judy G Russell, The Legal Genealogist posted this:

In her blog post she said that her cousin “went to bed as a J2 and woke up as a J-M172”. Wait a minute, J2, I am a J2. So, I went to my Family Tree DNA page, and sure enough I am now a J-M172. Now, I have no clue what all of that means, but I am hoping that in 2013 I can learn more about that.

There are 4 matches on my profile. I know one of the names listed, have spoken to him in the past, and we are descended from the same person, Charles Worthington. The 2nd person on the list had a name that contains several familiar surnames, but the 3rd name (me being the 4th name) I didn’t know. His surname wasn’t familiar. Not too many hints on his profile, where surnames and places are listed, so I dropped him an email trying to determine the connection.

This morning, I received a reply, not connection yet, but both of us are willing to see where the connection is. I went back to his profile and found 2 surnames that are “may be” potential. One is a very long shot, the 2nd isn’t such a long shot. So, a DNA journey may have begun.

Thank you Judy from brining us up to date on what is happening in the world of DNA.
